I’m so excited to talk to you about this book! If you’re a mystery fan or if you live in the UK and occasionally venture into bookshops or even supermarkets, you’ll have heard of a little book called The Thursday Murder Club. Its author, Richard Osman, is somewhat of a household name here in England. And the book itself has had phenomenal success. It’s a bestseller that has spent pretty much its entire bookish existence in the UK book charts.

As such, I only got around to reading it early this year after a long waiting period with the library. But I immediately fell in love with it. I completely get the hype. So it goes without saying that The Man Who Died Twice was one of my most anticipated releases for the second half of 2021. And friends, it DELIVERED. So let’s get straight into my spoiler-free review of The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman!

Many thanks to Viking for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

THE SECOND NOVEL IN THE RECORD-BREAKING, MILLION-COPY BESTSELLING THURSDAY MURDER CLUB SERIES BY RICHARD OSMAN

It’s the following Thursday.

Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He’s made a big mistake, and he needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster, and a very real threat to his life.

As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus?

But this time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can The Thursday Murder Club find the killer (and the diamonds) before the killer finds them?

Book Review

With its strong humour, fantastic cast and masterful use of mystery literary devices, Osman manages to provide another book that is not only thrilling and suspenseful but somehow also a real feel-good cosy mystery. There are so many red herrings involved that I had no idea where it was going at all. As such, I was pleasantly surprised by all the twists and reveals.

While we still get Joyce’s diary entries throughout which is one of the things I loved most about the first book in the series, we also get a lot more depth and insight into the other members of the Thursday Murder Club. (Both old and young members alike!) I especially loved getting to see more of Elizabeth’s backstory in this one. She certainly is one intriguing heroine but Joyce will always be my favourite – she’s so funny!

Overall, this was a fun mystery and I can’t wait for the third book in the series! I’ll continue to recommend and praise this series for a very long time. And if you’re still on the fence but love mysteries infused with humour and wit, you need to meet The Thursday Murder Club ASAP.
