A Complete Wrap-Up Of The Books I Read This Summer

October 27, 2020 in Wrap-Ups
All the Books I Read in July, August and September 2020 [pictured: stack of books with heart]

Why, hello! I’m officially three months behind on my wrap-ups so today I’m just going to blitz it. But before you run away, I’m not going to throw 40 reviews at you. Instead I’ll be keeping it simple and share only the ‘need-to-know’ information. (Basically the title, author and rating!) It’s split up by genre too so you can skip any genres that you don’t like. So without further ado, let’s talk books!

Please note: all books marked with an asterisk (*) are review copies. This means that I received these books for free in exchange for an honest review.

Non-Fiction

Non-fiction books I read in summer 2020: Why I'm No Longer Talking About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge, We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Heart Talk by Cleo Wade and Other Wordly by Yee-Lum Mak

First of all, let’s look at my non-fiction reads. I didn’t read as much non-fiction as I would have liked but it is a pretty mixed bag. We’ve got some poetry, some social justice issues and a book that’s perfect for booklovers!

  • We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ★★★★★
  • Heart Talk by Cleo Wade ★★★★
  • Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge ★★★★★
  • Other-Wordly by Yee-Lum Mak & Kelsey Garrity-Riley ★★★★★

Mystery & Thriller

Mystery and thriller books read in summer 2020: The Passenger by Lisa Lutz, Murder on Maternity by Holly Greenland, The Night Swim by Megan Goldin and Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This is my favourite genre so I’m surprised that I didn’t read many books here. Still, a great bunch! There were aliases, cults, cover-ups, haunted houses and more!

Young Adult

Young adult books I read in summer 2020: Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo, Loveless by Alice Oseman, They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

Yes, young adult still has massive appeal to me as a thirty-something. So naturally, I read a lot of it. And I love it. You’ll notice not a single one of the books listed below got less than a 5 star rating!

  • Loveless by Alice Oseman ★★★★★
  • Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo ★★★★★
  • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi ★★★★★
  • Dear Justyce by Nic Stone* ★★★★★
  • They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera ★★★★★
  • The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo ★★★★★
  • Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson* ★★★★★

Graphic Novels & Manga

Graphic novels I read in summer 2020: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Virtually Yours by Jeremy Holt & Elizabeth Beals, Odessa by Jonathan Hill and Giant Days by John Allison

I fell in love with graphic novels this summer. It’s such an accessible format – easy to read, fairly short but still full of fantastic stories. There was a lot of fantasy, some sci-fi, a little bit of romance and also graphic non-fiction!

  • Lumberjanes, Volume 2 by Noelle Stevenson et al ★★★★★
  • Heartstopper, Vol. 1 by Alice Oseman ★★★★★
  • The Woods, Vol. 1 & 2 by James Tynion IV et al ★★★★★
  • My Riot by Rick Spears & Emmett Helen* ★★★★
  • Frankie Comics by Rachel Dukes* ★★★★★
  • The Wizerd, Vol. 1 by Michael Sweater & Rachel Dukes* ★★★★
  • The Fiction by Curt Pires & David Rubín ★★★
  • Welcome to Wanderland by Jackie Ball & Maddi Gonzalez ★★★★
  • Giant Days, Vol. 1 by John Allison et al ★★★★★
  • Liebestrasse by Greg Lockard et al ★★★★
  • Quiet Girl in a Noisy World by Debbie Tung ★★★★★
  • Odessa by Jonathan Hill* ★★★★★
  • BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! Roselia Stage, Vol. 1 by Dr Pepperco et al* ★★★★
  • Women in Battle by Marta Breen & Jenny Jordahl ★★★★★
  • Pain is Really Strange by Steve Haines & Sophie Standing ★★
  • Virtually Yours by Jeremy Holt & Elizabeth Beals ★★★★★
  • Book Love by Debbie Tung ★★★★★
  • Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi ★★★★★

Other Fiction

Other fiction books I read in summer 2020: A Burning by Megha Majumdar, Beach Read by Emily Henry, The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi and Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis

Finally, here’s everything else that I read fiction-wise. We’ve got romance, sci-fi, horror and literary fiction! These are genres that I don’t read widely enough to give them their own sections but I do still read them from time to time. Again, a pretty solid bunch. Lots of 4 and 5 star ratings here!
